Happy New Year

A very belated Happy New Year!

We have been enjoying a relatively quiet January.  Jadon and Kalina were happy to return to school on January 4.  They both really enjoy school.  I hope that lasts forever!  School has been going well for both of them.  Jadon was excited about his school’s Martin Luther King Jr. assembly last Friday.  He will probably teach Kalina all the songs for the assembly before she starts kindergarten.  Kalina has taken her bike to school a few days.  The weather was nice enough last week that she was able to try her wheels outside.  We have quickly learned that little hills, even carpet, make riding more challenging.  We are sure that with some more practice, she’ll be just fine.  She gets more bike riding time on Wednesdays during OT/PT.  Her therapist makes obstacle courses for her and she usually rides around the big room looking for things.  Amazingly, she is a very proficient backwards driver.  I guess she has watched Jadon drive Scooter for so long that she just thinks it is normal.  She has almost perfected a three-point turn.  Last week she was allowed to ride her bike up and down a pretty big slide in the therapy room.  She, my daring child, was thrilled!

Our big excitement was last weekend.  We were privileged to spend the weekend at Camp Korey for a skeletal dysplasia family weekend.  Camp Korey is an amazing place and we are lucky that it is within an hours’ drive from our home (see http://campkorey.org/ for more information).   Last summer Camp Korey hosted a week long skeletal dysplasia camp.  Jadon was not able to go because we were on vacation most of the week.  We did go and visit for a few hours and liked what we saw.  Family weekends are what the name suggests – a time for the whole family to go to camp.  We enjoyed fun activities, great food, beautiful accommodations and wonderful company.  We were blessed to spend the weekend with 10 other skeletal dysplasia families as well medical staff from Children’s and an amazing Camp Korey staff.  On Saturday afternoon it snowed some, enough that Jadon could not drive his Scooter up the big hills.  Luckily, they had vehicles ready to help rescue campers.  Sunday morning it started snowing more so camp ended a few hours early.  The staff decided they wanted people to get home safely and give people as much daylight driving time as possible.  After our great weekend, Jadon is still not sure he wants to go to the summer camp there.  He is really worried about missing me, especially at bed time.  Kalina, on the other hand, told me she wants to go there when she gets bigger.  She would probably go now but you have to be 7 to go.

We have had more snow.  Yesterday there was no school, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.  Yesterday around 4:15 PM we got a call saying there is no school today.  The forecast calls for more snow and ice.  We are lucky to be in our nice, warm, house with plenty to do.
